TYPKI – Resource-wise nutrient recovery from industrial wastewaters
Target of TYPKI is to prevent nutrient emissions to environment and to simultaneously produce new circular economical products first for mining industry in 2028 and later for every industrial sector inside EU. Permission limits regarding nutrient emissions are tightening for discharged water and for this reason comprehensive techno-economical wastewater and side-stream treatment solutions are very much needed in the industry. Additionally, the TYPKI consortium aims to replace imported nutrients by their locally produced recycled counterparts, which will have a positive impact via secured supply and increased European nutrients self-sufficiency. Recovered nutrients can be used e.g. in construction materials, such as alternative adhesives, industrial chemicals, and fertilizer additives. Regulations regarding recycled products are eased, thus it is time to develop products around recycled nutrients.
The TYPKI consortium consists of research institutes and companies: VTT, University of Oulu, Tapojärvi, Aquaminerals, BioSO4, BrightPlus, Industrial Water Ltd, Agnico Eagle, Gasum, Hannukainen Mining, Valmet and Yara Suomi and includes the whole nutrient value chain starting from the wastewater producers, purification and recovery technology suppliers, manufacturers of recycled nutrient products or product ingredients, and end-users of technologies and materials. TYPKI research activities combined with expertise in the companies will form a systemic approach for the international market. The development will be carried out taking into account sustainability and techno-economic assessment of novel developed concepts and products. TYPKI creates a strong ecosystem around recycled nutrients with the support of international cooperation. With this cooperation, the competitiveness regarding the purification and recovery technologies, and recycled products having improved composition and fewer impurities can be increased.
